Doray’s grief-stricken family members at the scene of the accident that claimed his life

FAMILY members and friends are currently mourning the loss on Thursday of 40-year-old pedalcyclist, Navindra Doray, who became the country’s latest road fatality when he was struck down on the Bel Air Public Road, on the lower East Coast Demerara.

According to the police, Doray, of Block ‘F’, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was proceeding west along the southern side of the carriageway, when he was hit by a Tacoma (pickup) being driven by a 25-year-old Trinidadian national going in the same direction as he, and at a fast rate.
The police say that as the pickup approached Yokohama Auto Sales, which is on the southern side of the road, the driver proceeded to overtake several vehicles on the inside, which led to his vehicle ‘clipping’ Doray’s bicycle from behind, causing the cyclist to fall and injure himself in the head, as well as about the body.

The driver of the Tacoma was also injured, as was the 32-year-old male who was in the vehicle with him.
All three were reportedly taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where Doray was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the Tacoma and his travelling companion, meanwhile, were admitted, and were up to press-time said to be receiving treatment.
