AMID concerns following the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in Guyana, the University Of Guyana’s physical campus remains closed, while classes and examinations for this semester were held through varying Online platforms to ensure that academic guidelines are met, while students and staff adhere to the COVID-19 preventative measures.
However, on Tuesday, the University announced its plans to conduct the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE) On-line as well, for the 2020/2021 Academic Year. The Examination is scheduled to be held from September 14 to 18, 2020, while tutorials for the varying subject areas will be offered Online, through the University’s Moodle platform from August 31, to September 4, 2020 for applicants from both the Turkeyen and Tain campuses, irrespective of their geographical location. This examination targets applicants who do not have the general admission requirements for entry to the University of Guyana.
The eligibility requirements to qualify for the examination range from an applicant under the Mature Student Category (26 years and older) who has work experience in the required field of study; an applicant who does not have the relevant CSEC/GCE passes, but has a Diploma from either the Burrowes School of Art or Critchlow Labour College; a Registered Nurse who does not have the relevant CSEC/GCE passes in Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject. It is important to note that a pass at this examination will be valid for entry into the University of Guyana for a period of two (2) years.
With the current enrollment of some 8,000 students, the University of Guyana (UG) has graduated more than 20,000 students who have gone on to successful careers locally, regionally and internationally. The University is also a major contributor to the national economy, and to business and industry. Established in 1963 on a part-time basis with shared space at Queens College, the University of Guyana moved to its own campus at Turkeyen in 1970, and expanded in 2000 with the addition of the Tain Campus. It now offers more than 120 Under-graduate and Post-graduate Programmes, including the Natural Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Urban Planning and Management, Tourism Studies, Education, Creative Arts, Economics, Law, Medicine, Optometry and Nursing. Several Online programmes are available, and The UG also offers extra-mural classes at four locations through its Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE). The UG also offers the opportunity for student engagement in debating, sports, and cultural, religious and professional activities.
