The annual ‘Night of Film’ Caribbean film screening goes virtual in 2020 and aims to support the arts by showcasing the work of local and regional filmmakers while using the proceeds to fund the development of the arts programme at Queen’s College school.
This event, which will be held via Zoom on Saturday, August 22 from 18:00 hours, was conceived by the Queen’s College of Guyana Alumni Association New York (QCAANY) in collaboration with the Caribbean Film Academy (CaFA). This year, one-hour short films will be screened, which were all chosen on their artistic merit.
According to President of the QCAANY, John Campbell, the initiative aims to bring both the Guyana and Caribbean communities together in celebration of the arts and culture. Additionally, he posited that this will increase the visibility of the short films, the filmmakers and the actors and also provide opportunities for collaboration and discourse on the films and the sector at large.
“We expect a global audience including students from the Theatre Arts Department at Queen’s College,” Campbell said highlighting, “There will be a discussion after each screening and the audience can look forward to a very informative discourse with the filmmakers and other industry experts.”
This year, as well, the proceeds from the screening will be used to fund the development of the arts programmes at Queen’s College.
“There is potential for extended positive impact on or collaboration with other secondary schools, based on our track record of partnership with other institutions when sponsoring youth programs,” Campbell related, highlighting also that the association hosts a yearly Student Conference at the school, not only for students of Queen’s College.
Campbell also noted that the QCAANY is also in communication with the leadership of QC and the school’s Old Students’ Association to determine what other areas need additional support, particularly as schools everywhere try to adapt to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
QCAANY was founded in 1991; it is a nonprofit organisation that exists to assist in the rehabilitation and revitalization of the Queen’s College of Guyana. The Association recently assisted with the development of the school’s Robotics clubs, and has been providing supplemental educational programmes notable through the Student Conferences and the Summer Math Institute.
