BLM raises concerns of public servants being fired

THE Black Lives Matter Guyana movement has raised concerns over the termination of several public servants.
The non-government organization, in a statement, noted that political victimisation and racial discrimination resulting in the illegal and unconscionable termination of contracts and terms of services for public officers will not be tolerated.

In addition, the organization is urging workers to remain steadfast and to fight for their rights.
“We encourage workers to stand their ground, and to report attempts by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and its representatives to the police and other competent authorities. If you know of unjustified attempts to terminate your service in violation of your employment agreement, stand your ground and do not give in to the illegal attempts to relieve you of your duties without due process and in accordance with relevant labour laws.”

The organization also urged workers who felt as though they were wronged to seek legal recourse and sue the State for wrongful and egregious termination of their employment services and violation of Guyana’s labour laws.

His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali, the organization said, must demonstrate to Guyanese and the international community that he is capable of managing and holding PPP/C representatives culpable of cruel policies and decisions at a time when Guyana and other nations are experiencing an economic downturn due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. “Black mothers and fathers who are already under crushing pressure are being pushed to the breadline because of the colour of their skin and their political affiliation,” they said.
The Black Lives Guyana movement hereby puts the Ali regime on notice, “We will not stand and allow the destruction of one section of Guyana’s population. We will defend and expose and fight each and every instance of political victimisation and racial discrimination.”

Additionally, they noted that the Ali regime should be committed to protect workers’ rights and the right to freedom of association, including political association of every Guyanese.
