EVEN through the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of the West Indies (UWI) campuses are moving forward with reopening for the September 2020-2021 academic year. In preparation for this new academic year, the Guyana Students’ Associations in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica will be hosting an online orientation forum on Saturday, August 8, for new students who will be pursuing their university education at any of the University of the West Indies (UWI) campuses in those countries, the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) or the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).
The forum will begin at 15:00 hours on Saturday, and will feature presentations from student representatives of the various schools providing information on immigration, financial aid, accommodation and how to adapt to a new culture.
The Virtual forum will be done online, via a Zoom Meeting and streamed Live on Facebook via the following pages: The Guyana Students’ Association in Trinidad and Tobago (GuySATT); The Guyanese Students’ Association in Cave Hill (GuySaCH); and, The Guyana Students’ Association in Jamaica (GuySAJ). The Zoom link will be made available on those Facebook pages as well, ahead of Saturday’s forum.
This forum, which has been done annually, allows new and prospective students to garner valuable information while engaging with Guyanese present at the respective campuses. It also affords students the opportunity to meet and network with other new students preparing to attend these institutions.
Additionally, the uncertainty new and prospective students may have of beginning a new academic journey, during this pandemic, coupled with these limited knowledge of campus operations, and how learning will take place, emphasises the need for such a forum.
The Guyana Students’ Association is a community space made up of tertiary-level Guyanese students. Their aim is to foster strong social interaction, promote a cohesive network and create opportunities for empowerment and support, among Guyanese tertiary students.
Interested persons are asked to make contact with any of the associations via their Facebook pages, on Instagram (@guysatt592, @guysaj592 or @guysa_ch) or by sending a WhatsApp message to: +592-644-5727
