A 53-year-old pedal cyclist was, on Wednesday night, struck down and killed along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Andray Simmons of lot 94 Parker Street, Providence.

The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the accident occurred around 18:05 hours between pedal cyclist Simmons and motor car PVV 1380 which was driven by a 30-year-old resident of Bell West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara.

The driver of the motor car told police that he was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway on Providence Public Road, when, in the vicinity of the national stadium, the pedal cyclist rode across the road from west to east and ended up in his path.

As a result of the collision, Simmons was flung onto the car’s bonnet, hitting the front windscreen of the motor car before falling to the ground.

Simmons was picked up in a unconscious state by public-spirited citizens, placed in the said motor car and transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motorcar found no trace of alcohol.
The driver is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
