–following motorbike-bicycle collision
ONE man is dead and another is fighting for his life following an horrific accident on Sunday afternoon on the Corentyne.
Dead is 47-year-old Malchan Ramdanny, called ‘Rasta’, of Number 69 Village, East Berbice Corentyne.
He reportedly died on the spot after swerving into the path of a motorcycle on the Number 68 Public Road.
According to reports, at around 16:20hrs on Sunday, Ramdanny was proceeding north on his bicycle when he suddenly turned into the path of a blue-and-white Suzuki Sports motorcycle, being driven by 30-year-old Police Constable, Navindra Jhodan.
Such was the impact that Ramdanny was sent flying, before landing in the middle of the western lane of the Public Road some 20 meters away, while the motorcyclist, having lost control of his machine, ran into a signboard.
Public-spirited citizens who witnessed the accident rushed to the rescue of both men, but were too late to save Ramdanny, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Hospital.
Jhodan, on the other hand, was prepped by emergency medical team and transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he remains in a critical state as doctors battle to save his life.
At the time of the accident, Jhodan, of John Street, New Amsterdam, was reportedly on his way home after going for a regular weekend jaunt to Springlands with his biker buddies.
Ramdanny’s relatives, who were shocked at his sudden passing, described him as a very resourceful person who did odd jobs around the community to make ends meet.
The police have since launched an investigation into the accident.
