Labourer sentenced for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition

A 58-year-old labourer of Hoff-Van-Aurich Backdam, Essequibo Coast, was, on Monday, sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined $100,000 for the possession of a shotgun and ammunition.

Chandra Shankar, called ‘Rooplall’, or ‘Zappa’, appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Suddie Magistrate Court, charged for the possession of a firearm and ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Shankar pleaded guilty to the two charges which alleged that, on May 23, 2020, at his home, he had two improvised shotguns and live ammunition.
He was sentenced to one (1) year’s imprisonment and fined $ 50,000 for each charge. The sentences will run concurrently

According to the facts, on May 24, around 14:00 hours, a party of policemen went to Shankar’s residence and conducted a search.

Two improvised shotguns as well as seven live and one spent cartridge were found concealed on his premises; one of the weapons was disassembled.
