A MINER, who sustained stab and chop wounds on Sunday night at the Duquarie Backdam in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni, is recovering from his injuries.

The injured man, Randy Peters, a miner from the village of Paruima on the Guyana/Venezuela border, was injured following an altercation with another man on Sunday night.

Reports are that Peters and another man, said to be an excavator operator, had an exchange of words and this led to a fight. The assailant fired a chop at Peters neck and the victim also sustained stab wounds to his shoulders.

On Monday morning, a truck ventured into the area from the village of Cumang for Peters who, by this time, had lost a lot of blood. He was attended to by persons in the area.
He was taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital, some 6 to 7 hours from the scene of the incident, and was immediately given treatment by hospital staff.

Reports are that police ventured into the area in search of the assailant. According to persons in the area, many similar incidents have occurred in the mining areas within the region; they go unchecked by the authorities.
