GUNMEN, on Easter Monday, descended on persons at a ‘cock fight’ in Water Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, and robbed them of cash and other valuables.

The Guyana Chronicle was made to understand that around 16:00hrs on the day in question, competitors and patrons at the event were busy cheering for their favourite cock when gunmen showed up.

The bandits, numbered two or three, rode up on motorcycles, armed with guns and confronted the gamblers.

The gunmen reportedly arrived after bets were paid out and held several persons at gunpoint. Other persons escaped by running through residents’ yard and jumping fences to escape the bandits.

After committing the act, the gunmen jumped onto their motorcycles and made good of their escape.

One resident said, “I was coming home and I see these boys with guns, but me ain’t tek it serious, cause I think is police them. Next thing I hear is that they stick up the cock fight.”

Another resident related, “Them gunmen had them people at the cock fight like scatter fowl. I see a lil boy run out the yard breathless. He tell me aunty they just rob we.”

Police investigation is still ongoing.
