CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan, on Wednesday, January 29, 2020,
sentenced three Bangladeshi men to three months in prison for entering Guyana illegally.
Shakhawat Khan, 20, a Student; Jacket Chowdhurg, 19, a Student and Siddik Ahmed 27, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge, when it was read to them through an interpreter.
Particulars of the charge stated that, on January 25, 2020, at Springlands, they entered Guyana by sea, and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
Police prosecutor told the court that, on the day in question, the three defendants were in a route 72 bus, when police intercepted the bus at the Bamia outpost,Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
A search was conducted on the defendants and it was discovered that there were no entry stamps in their passports.Consequently,they were taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters.
Further investigations were conducted and it was concluded that they had entered the country illegally and were heading to Brazil. They were therefore arrested and charged.
Magistrate McLennan, after listening to the prosecutor, sentenced each of them to three months in prison and ordered that, after serving their sentences, they are to be escorted to the nearest port of exit and deported back to their country.
