It is to the Government’s credit that legal luminaries are now recognized

Dear Editor
It is truly heartwarming to note that since 2015, several outstanding attorneys-at-law, all of great calibre, decorum, principle and respect for the law were granted the appointment of Senior Counsel – famously referred to as ‘Silk.’

In a release from the Ministry of the Presidency, it is especially an absolute joy to my heart to see that my very good friend and mentor, my youthful adviser and counsel, Justice Stanley Moore, being elevated to this rank, along with fellow high-powered Attorneys-at-Law, Ms. Jamela Ayesha Ali, Mr. Murseline Bacchus and Mr. Roysdale Forde.
Recently, I recall other prominent Lawyers who were also appointed as Senior Counsel. These included Mr. K. Juman Yassin, Mr. Fitz Le Roy Peters, Mr. Andrew Mark Fitzgerald Pollard, Ms. Josephine Whitehead, Mr. Rajendra Poonai and Mrs. Shalimar Ali-Hack. These appointments of Senior Counsel and National Awardees have truly been a hallmark in this current Governmental era of service to Guyana. It is one that is moving and extremely respected by this writer.

After the last set of appointments, I wrote a letter to the media, “The Government should ask the opposition to sit on all boards dealing with oil,” that was published in the March 6th, 2018 edition of the Stabroek News, in which I asked, what would have happened in Guyana, if the President, His Excellency, David Arthur Granger/the Government, had provided this appointment to a well-deserved Attorney-at-Law, who is known for his brilliance and use of the law – which has now, in many cases, become historic in Guyana and the Caribbean. I am referring to Mr. Mohabir Anil Nandlall, former Attorney General of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. I am just wondering, how this would have impacted the heart of Mr. Anil Nandlall himself, as an influential leader within the opposition – PPP/C. And, how that would have impacted on some open-minded Guyanese who are on the fence when it comes to voting? I think such a decision by this Government would have created an uproar of joy in the Guyanese society.

So with that being said, I must say congratulations to these four (4) new Senior Counsel, to the President/Government for appointing them and for providing more National Awards to the country than we have ever seen in a long time in Guyana. I applaud the Government as an unbiased non-political patriot of this great country, Guyana.

Sincerely,
Hajji Dr. Roshan Khan Snr.
