Dear Editor
THE letter appearing in last Friday’s edition (Jan 4th) from myself as Convenor of the Policy Forum Guyana (PFG) sought to challenge the position adopted by the Guyana Gold & Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) with respect to upcoming elections.
To the extent that that posture was articulated by Mr. Andron Alphonso, the new President of the GGDMA, he was referred to in the letter.
PFG’s aim is to stimulate a much-needed debate over the scandalously complacent approach to [the] depletion of Guyana’s natural assets in general. Our concern is with the management of the gold sector and the GGDMA’s attitude to rights and responsibilities, not the role of Mr. Alphonso or his family. While anyone is free to comment on any aspect of the issue, reducing it to personalities will not advance the debate that Guyana really needs.
Regards
Mike McCormack
