TWO suspected thieves were arrested on Sunday, moments after they allegedly snatched the cellphones of two foreign men in the vicinity of Longden Street, Georgetown.
In a statement on Sunday, the Guyana Police Force said the suspected phone thieves were caught as a result of the swift response by police and public-spirited citizens. The incident occurred at around 09:50hrs.
According to reports, public spirited citizens, upon witnessing the robbery, called the police via 911, and the information was filtered via-VHF Network to ranks on bicycle patrol in the Stabroek area, who immediately proceeded to the location. The suspects were pointed out by the victims and public-spirited citizens.
It was reported that during the pursuit, one of the suspects aggressively attacked an armed rank with a cutlass but surrendered only after he was repeatedly warned. The force said the rank exercised much restraint, and resorted to discharging a warning shot in the air.
The stolen items were not recovered.
