MAGISTRATE Clive Nurse, on Tuesday, December 24, 2019, sentenced a man to three years in prison and fined him $150,000 for possession of gun and ammunition.
Raphael Hintman appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty, with explanation, to the charges, when they were read to him.
Particulars of the first charge stated that, on December 18, 2019, at West La Penitence, he had one .32 pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The second charge stated that, on the same day, and at the same place, he had four live rounds of .32 ammunition, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
“I will not waste your time or the court time, yes I buy the gun for protection. I get rob plenty times already so I buy the gun for protection I have a seven year old child,” Hintman said.
According to information, on the day in question, around 20:30 hours, police, on patrol duties in the area, intercepted a motor car which had three occupants. Hintman was seated at the back. The police observed Hintman throwing an object on the floor in the car.
A search was conducted in the vehicle and the gun was found. Hintman was arrested, and, based on legal advice, he was later charged.
Magistrate Nurse, after listening to the information provided, stated that since he (Hintman) did not waste the court’s time he would take off one year and since he was honest he took off another year, so, instead of five years on the possession of illegal gun he will serve three years and pay a fine of $100,000.
The Magistrate also sentenced him to two years on the ammunition charge and fined him $50,000 and stated that the sentences would run concurrently.
