PROMINENT Indian dance group, Project Chhauni from Odisha, India, performed at the Bal Nivas, Berbice in a show titled “Mayurbhanj Chhau Dance”, on Friday.
The group will perform today at Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown at 19:00hrs.

The all-male troop will also conduct workshops today and tomorrow at Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra. This event is a collaboration between the High Commission of India along with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Georgetown, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

Project Chhauni is an initiative of the District Administration of Mayurbhanj in India geared at reviving the lost glory of dance form Mayurbhanj Chhau. It was launched on May 19, 2016 by Sri Rajesh Prabhakar Patil (Collector and District Magistrate of Mayurbhanj) at Baripda, Mayurbhanj in Odisha State.

The Project Chhauni was prepared by Subhasree Mukherjee, a well-known chhau dancer and resident of Mayurbhanj, who has also worked closely with chhau artists and organisers in the past.

Meanwhile, earlier on Friday, Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr K.J. Srinivasa in the presence of President of Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Dr Vindhya Persaud, introduced the group to the media at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.
The dace group departs Guyana on Monday.
