MAGISTRATE McGusty, on Thursday December 5, 2019, remanded a 39-year-old farmer to prison for attempted murder.
Micheal Francis appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Particulars of the charge stated that, on November 28, 2019, at Karasabai South Pakaraima, he attempted to murder Raphael Matthew.
Attorney-at-law Jerome Khan, who represented Francis in the matter, told the court that his client was trying to protect his wife from Matthew who was drunk and had attacked her at their farm, and was threatening to kill her with a hoe.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted to Francis based on the seriousness of the offence and the punishment attached. He added that, on the day in question, there was an argument between Matthew and Francis’ wife and Francis walked over, picked up a hoe, and dealt Matthew a blow to his head, causing the injuries.
Blackman stated that Matthew was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. The court also heard that Francis admitted to the offence and there were witnesses who said that Francis and Matthew had no argument.
Magistrate McGusty, after listening to the prosecutor, remanded Francis to prison until December 16, 2019. The matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
