– do your best on the job, deputy mayor
RECENTLY, Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore urged councillors and senior officers of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) not to go to work just to earn, but to be concerned with giving their best on the job as well.
He uttered these sentiments during his address at a workshop organised by the Ministry of Communities a few days ago at the Pressville Banquet Hall on Regent Street, Lacytown, Georgetown.
The workshop, which ran from 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs was organised to highlight the roles and responsibilities of councillors and senior officers and to examine the importance of the municipal budget cycle in prudent financial management.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communities, Emil McGarrell, noted that councillors and officers should be keen on observing important principles that govern their jobs since these are critical to self-development and the advancement of the municipality.
He reiterated that roles, responsibilities and relationships impact the ability of the municipality when it comes to the provision of critical services to the citizenry.

Meanwhile, the deputy mayor offered that the roles and functions of the officers must be understood within the context of the Municipal and District Council Act, Chapter 28:01.
He pointed out that too often people go to work just focusing on the money. “I believe that the time has come for us to adopt to change; we must understand our roles and strive give our best.”
Mentore further pointed out that a house divided against itself cannot stand and it is important that officers and councillors move past personality issues and deliberate on issues that affect the delivery of services.
According to him, the citizens of Georgetown expect the council to solve the many problems affecting them including drainage, security, garbage disposal and sanitation. Therefore, he said, the officers must understand and embrace their roles and responsibilities to effect the changes that are necessary.
Mentore called upon the officers to work as one in the context of their roles and responsibilities to provide improved services to the citizens.
