TWENTY-FIVE-year-old Sophia resident was, on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that, based on advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), he will be unable to proceed with the attempted murder charge against Perreira.
One month ago, Perreira was charged with attempted murder, having set a woman ablaze. However, when he appeared in court yesterday, the attempted murder charge was withdrawn and a murder charge was read to him.
Wazim Perreira was not required to plead to the charge which stated that, on October 10, 2019, at Sophia, he murdered Olivia DeFreitas.
According to information, around 13:00 hours on the day in question, Perreira visited the woman and requested to talk to her. The woman refused and Perreira went away. He returned shortly after with a container of gasoline and he threw it on the woman and set her ablaze.
The woman raised an alarm and neighbours came running to her rescue. The woman was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was being treated for second degree burns. She later succumbed to her injuries.
Chief Magistrate McLennan remanded Perreira to prison and adjourned the matter until October 31, 2019.
