TWO men, who were last week busted with over 42 kilograms of cannabis by the Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) during an operation, was, on Monday, October 21, 2019, remanded to prison.
The men Shafeek Latif, 39, and Naresh Totoram, both residents of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul, who sits at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
The duo denied the charge which alleged that, on October 15, 2019, at Parika Public Road, EBE they had 42.824 kilograms of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Magistrate Ally-Seepaul remanded the men to prison until November 8, 2019, for disclosure.
The Guyana Chronicle had earlier reported that the bust was made following an operation in the wee hours of Tuesday, October 15, 2019, which led to the arrest of the two defendants, who were in a motor car at Parika.
According to reports, on the day in question, about 03:00 hours, after conducting surveillance, CANU intercepted both men who were occupants of a Spacio motorcar at Parika Public Road, EBD. Two bulky salt bags containing the suspected narcotic were found on the back seat of the car.
The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 42.824 kilograms with a street value of $21,412,000.
