$100M Wauna Primary School commissioned
Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, with responsibility for Labour, Hon. Keith Scott greets students before the commissioning ceremony

THE government has once again delivered on a promise in the education sector – this time through the commissioning of the Wauna Primary School in Region 1, Barima-Waini.
The $100M facility was commissioned by Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, with responsibility for Labour, Hon. Keith Scott on Saturday. “The government promised that education will come first for all young people in this country. And, to have a proper education, we have to encourage you to stay in school. In order to encourage you to stay [in school], you must have the best environment so that you can learn,” Minister Scott told the gathering of pupils, teachers and community members.

He told pupils that their school was designed to transform the life of any person “who walks through the door”. Beyond the academic, the school will also provide technical education to students in the higher levels. From his department, Minister Scott said that trainers from the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) will guide those students who wish to pursue studies in the technical field.

Such students will be exposed to training in refrigeration, electrical installation, welding and cooking, among other courses. Eventually, Information Technology (IT) will be taken to the community, and by extension, the school, Minister Scott said, will aid development. There was a revolutionary approach to teaching on the way, Minister Scott assured the gathering
“This government has every intention of making sure that you are given every opportunity to be able to profit by our desire.” He reminded those present that the government has made education a priority for all of Guyana, including the hinterland. The Department of Education, in the region, had already budgeted for some micro-science kits which will allow teachers, in the absence of a science laboratory, to carry out experiments, until the science lab was built. The construction of the lab was scheduled for the new school year. (DPI)
