DESPITE heightened police presence at the Stabroek Market, persons continue to get robbed of their belongings.
A recent footage, which surfaced on Facebook, showed a person getting robbed while in the area of Stabroek Market on Thursday evening.
The footage shows a gang of individuals walking casually by before one of the individuals branched off and went close to someone, who was standing alone with his phone. The individual, who appeared to be affiliated with the gang, pretended to be looking for something before he snatched the aforementioned individual’s phone and ran away.
The victim and some other individuals took off after the suspected thief but it was unconfirmed whether they were able to catch him.
In the comments, under the footage on Facebook, persons said the gang is notorious and would usually roam the Stabroek Market area.
In addition to the gang shown in the footage, there have been many complaints in the past about gangs robbing persons of their belongings, and in some cases, even inflicting injuries to persons.
Over the years, persons have also complained bitterly about “phone snatchers” roaming the Stabroek Market area on a daily basis.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had made several attempts to address the situation by establishing two police outposts around the Stabroek Market area, but the impact of those outposts was, in some cases, considered minimal.
The GPF, however, made a commitment to ensuring that crime in the Stabroek area is reduced and controlled.
