MINISTER within the Ministry of Agriculture, Valerie Adams-Yearwood on Monday paid a visit to the Buxton Health Centre on the East Coast, to hand over gardening tools and equipment to staff there.

The purpose of the donation was to facilitate the implementation of the Guyana Re-Aligning Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health (GRAIN-H) programme.

“This is a promise kept, and as a part of our concept note, we have agreed that the Ministry of Agriculture would provide the Region Four public health departments with tools for each of the 34 Health Centres that span across the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara,” the Minister said.

Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Ms. Genevieve Allen thanked the ministry for delivering on its promise to implement the project.

“On behalf of the Regional Democratic Council,” she said, “we are heartened with this promise that has been delivered, and we look forward to the project being fully implemented.”

Having said her piece, she then appealed to all the residents in Region Four to utilise the services that will be provided by the Ministries of Agriculture and Health to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“We are working towards a more nutritious and healthy people here in Guyana, and it’s an opportune time that this is being done in Agriculture Month,” Allen said.

A number of kitchen forks, hoes, shovels and cutlasses were donated to the Buxton Health Centre.

The GRAIN-H programme was launched just last month in commemoration of Agriculture Month this year. The primary objective of the programme is to ensure that Guyana has access to sufficient safe and nutritious food to promote an active and healthy lifestyle among Guyanese.
