Auntie, nephew implicated in robbery-under-arms charge

DEODAT Samsundar, aka ‘Pig’, of Paradise Village on the Essequibo Coast was on Wednesday slapped with a robbery-under-arms charge and appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam.

His aunt, Shamdai Narine, aka ‘Kamal’, was also hauled before the court for the same offence, except that in her case, she was charged as an accessory to the crime; her nephew having reportedly first passed the loot to one Lisa France, who in turn passed it on to her.
Apparently, when confronted by the police, Narine admitted that she did had possession of the bag, but that she’d since burnt it.

For the role she played in the commission of the crime, Narine was granted $300,000 bail, while her nephew was put on $1.5M bail.

Family members are, however, contending that the bail is too high, as Samsundar admitted stealing the bag, but claimed that all it had in it was G$7,000, and not G$200,000 and US$4,000 as the victim is claiming.
They’re also alleging that when Samsundar was arrested in Georgetown, before he was taken back to Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) to answer the charges, he was given a sound thrashing by the police, reportedly at the instigation of a close relative of the victim who is a policeman. He even has a medical to substantiate his claims, they said.

Both aunt and nephew will have to return to court on September 4.
