THE horse racing stalwarts are preparing for the 100th Anniversary of the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC) with an event on August 1.

The seven-race programme is being organised by the 4 Horseman Promotions in collaboration with the Ryan Crawford Turf Club.

During a press briefing yesterday, co-coordinator Colin Elcock related that the meet will focus a lot on the locally bred horses.

“I’m trying to promote local content,” he told the media, adding that his meet will use the Jamaican Formula where locally bred horses and foreign-bred horses will run for the same prize moneys.

According to Elcock, “The idea behind the event is to do something for the 100th Anniversary of the PMTC and try to rescue horse racing from where it is currently.”

Elcock singled out the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred racing committee as one of those that share this vision of using that formula, adding that they have already altered their upcoming programme to match that.

The seven-race programme, which is expected to secure the traditional sponsors, will see the feature event being the 1300m 3-year-old Guyana-bred horses for a first prize of $300 000.

Other events include the H3 and Lower class over the same distance for a $220 000 first prize while the 2-year-old Guyana-bred horses will run 1000m for the same prize money.

The J and Lower 4 years old and over horses will run 1300m for a first prize of $180 000 while the K2 and Lower 4 years old and over class will run over the same distance for a first prize of $170 000.

The L Class Open (2- & 3-year-old horses not allowed) along with the L1 and Lower Class (4 years old and over) will run over 1100m for first prize of $160 000 and $140 000 respectively.

The event will be held under the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) rules.
