Pregnant woman charged with assault

A pregnant woman was on Monday, July 22, 2019, arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isccas-Marcus for assault, after she allegedly threw water on a woman, during the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) protest at Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) at Barack and High Streets, Kingston, Georgetown.

Cassandra Amsterdam, 24, of Barack and High Streets, appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was released on $5,000 bail, after she denied the charge.

Particulars of the charge alleged that, on Friday, July 19, 2019, at Barack and High Streets, Amsterdam unlawfully assaulted Yanalla Dalrymple.

The matter was transferred to the courtroom of City Magistrate Rondel Weaver for September 9, 2019.

Based on reports, Amsterdam threw a bucket of water onto the persons who were in the vicinity of the protest, and some of it landed on Dalrymple.

The woman claimed that the protesters were disturbing her with their chants.

The PPP supporters mounted a protest on July 19, 2019, calling on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to begin preparations for General and Regional Elections immediately.
