One dead, three injured in Festival City shooting

FORMER murder accused, Leon Duncan called “Whistle,” was gunned down late Sunday evening while his brother and two other men were injured in a shooting at Willemstad Street, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Duncan, 29, of Festival City, was shot while in the company of his brother, Shaquille Duncan and two other men, who have been identified as Orande Gordon of Nutmeg Street, North Ruimveldt and Lance Simon.

Reports are that the shooting occurred at approximately 22:00hrs. The group of young men were said to have been playing a game of cards at a culvert, a short distance from Duncan’s home, when a carload of men drove up and opened fire on them. The shooting was said to be gang-related.

After initially opening fire on the group, the shooter or shooters reportedly exited the vehicle and stood over Leon, firing at point-blank range.

“I was on my verandah, the car, a [Toyota] 212 pass through and drive round the place, but nobody didn’t know the car going and do mischief. I didn’t even know was bullets; I thought was squibs. Then my husband said that don’t sound like squib, that sound like bullets, then I see everybody running out to see what going on, but the car circle round back the place and everybody running because nobody don’t want no car open bullet on them,” noted a resident who lives a short distance away from where the shooting occurred.
“They started shooting people right down deh by the culvert and everybody scatter and went running East, West, North and South. When he get shoot, the boys them [shooters] make sure they come out and shoot he [Leon] properly.”

After the shooting, residents were apprehensive to pick up Leon, who is believed to have died on the spot.

“He was lying there for a while because people frighten to go to see what was going on because they [the shooters] turn back and circling afterwards; nobody didn’t know what to do. After a while, he friends and people around the area seh let they carry he to the hospital and see what they could do; but when they lift he, you could see that he didn’t have no life in he body,” the resident said.

The Duncans have had numerous brushes with the law.
Shaquille Duncan was charged with armed robbery in February this year. He was shot by his accomplice during that incident. He was remanded to prison after making an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Leon Duncan had been before the courts for attempted murder, several armed robbery offences and assaulting a peace officer.

In March 2018, Duncan was slapped with wounding charges after he allegedly assaulted two security officers attached to the “704 Sports Bar” during a party in the company’s park. He is currently out on $160,000 bail for those charges.

In 2017, Duncan was charged with attempted murder and discharging a loaded firearm with intent, in relation to two shooting incidents at the Rio Night Club and the Privilege Night Club
Police are investigating the shooting on Sunday night.
