THE community of Second Phase, Wisroc, has already lost half of its access road to erosion following heavy showers in the current May- June rainy season.

The road has become impassable and residents were forced to cordon off the area and divert traffic to another route. While the road has already been severely affected, residents living in close proximity to the massive breakage are fearful that their houses will be affected.

Sometime last week, engineers from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MoPI), visited the community to assess the situation and promised to return by last weekend, but this did not happen. “They told me they would come back by weekend, now is already Tuesday and I ain’t see anybody. I am watching to see by tomorrow if they will come and what will be done, because if another hard rain fall, we done with,” Constituency Representative for the community, Gary King said.

He believes that the situation should have been treated as an emergency case, since residents’ properties are involved and the inconvenience the road blockage is causing them at this time. The erosion started during the recently-concluded dry season and as the community suffered several brush fires. One particular fire was so threatening that the residents had to open a main pipeline in the now-eroded area to put out the inferno.

The gushing water from the pipe, initially caused the area to become eroded, but this worsened as the rainy season stepped in. The residents hope that something will be done, even at the regional level, to address the situation before the end of the week.
