FOUR men appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 26, 2019, charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The defendants are Dinesh Dias, Anthony Collins, Seenarine Mathura and Mohammed Inshan. They allegedly had in their possession 1.890 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in a fire extinguisher to be placed on an outgoing flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, on the night of Tuesday, April 23, 2019.
The drugs were discovered on Tuesday, April 23, when members of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) conducted a raid on a house at Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
Dinesh Dias pleaded guilty to the charge, informing the court that the drug was found at his residence and that the others, while present, had no knowledge of its presence there.
He was immediately sentenced to 48 months in prison and fined $5.1 million.
Because of the guilty plea by Dias, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit indicated to the court that the charges against the others will be withdrawn.
