Essequibo youths claim police brutality

FOUR teenagers from Charity, Region Two are claiming that they were badly beaten by police attached to ‘G’ Division during a patrol in the area.

According to information reaching Guyana Chronicle, the teenagers, along with their parents, went to PNCR Chairman, Prince Holder, to seek advice following the ordeal.
Prince Holder, upon seeing the marks of the children’s skin, contacted commander of ‘G’ Division, Khalid Pareshram, who in turn advised him to advise the teenagers to give statements to the police.

Speaking to the media, the teenagers, ages 13, 14, 13 and 15, said that they were beaten on different occasions by police and taken to the Charity Police Station.
When asked what the offence they had committed was, one of the boys related that he was walking on the road when the policemen on patrol duty hauled him into their vehicle and started to cuff and beat him with a baton.

He said they wanted to take him to the Charity Wharf to dump him overboard but he began to scream and they took him to the Charity Police Station where they took an electrical wire and started to choke and beat him mercilessly.

He was later released on Tuesday with countless marks of violence about the body. The young man has since gotten a medical from the Charity Oscar Joseph Hospital.

One of the other teenagers said he cannot hear properly due to the severe beating he received. He claimed he was cuffed several times on his way to the station.

He said the police had accused him of robbing a resident and beat him to accept that indeed he robbed the resident.

The two other teenagers also suffered severe beatings. They have since given statements on their horrific experience at the hands of the police.

Holder said he will be making a report at the Police Complaint’s Authority and noted that police brutality is a cruel act. He said several other teenagers, especially in the Charity area, were abused in the past.
