Guyanese have worked hard to develop Guyana Goldfields

Dear Editor,

THE resources of Guyana belong to the people of Guyana, and if foreigners want to come into Guyana and invest in developing those resources, do spare us their contemptuous recitals of what they have done for Guyanese people and the Government of Guyana.

These claims of what they have done for us often reflect their inherent historical arrogance. Perry Holloway, one of the well paid recently hired heads at Guyana Goldfields recently writing of what his company has done for the people and Government of Guyana just sickened me to my stomach. How dare this man attempt to censure Guyanese newspapers for enlightening us of the amount of Government concessions given to this company; their failure to keep to their production promises made to the Government of Guyana and their contracting out of work to foreigners rather than locals. I understand that Holloway’s hiring made a Guyanese founder redundant (heard it on the Gordon Moseley morning programme).

We as Guyanese people have to quickly disavow ourselves of the notion that these folks are doing us a favour. Some of them need jobs just like many of us, and basically are just pimping Guyanese resources. Holloway first visited the mine about a month or two ago, walked around a bit and suddenly he is an expert on this mine. What is missing in this exhausted rhetoric is the sacrifices of Guyanese persons that braved the elements, sustained many injuries and even died in the pursuit of the developing of this mine.

Holloway please recite for us where is Warudi, and how the Guyanese people braved the rapids of the Cuyuni to enable you and other newcomers, some as inexperienced in mining as yourself to now reap your salaries, compensations and stock options.

Let us quickly stop thinking that to speak truth to this masquerade that visa, some grant aid or invite to some celebratory day cocktail might be at stake.
Regards,
E. Naughton
