Defending champs Trafalgar win on opening night

ON Friday night when the Berbice Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ began, the defending champions, Trafalgar, launched their title defence with a win as Lichfield, New Amsterdam [NA] Kings, Outsiders and East Bank Gunners also notched up victories.

Playing at the NA Ferry Tarmac, a capacity crowd witnessed Trafalgar’s dismantling of Rose Hall as the reigning champs notched up a 6-2 win. Olvis Mitchell bagged a helmet-trick in the fifth and seventh minutes while he also scored a ‘Guinness Goal [any goal scored in the final three minutes of regulation and extra time counts as two] in the 19th minute.
Meanwhile, Adrian Prince and Odari Miller netted a goal apiece in the ninth and 13th minutes, respectively.

Shaquell Betson was the lone goalscorer for the losers, netting a Guinness Goal in the 18th minute.
Meanwhile, Lichfield edged Canje 3-2 with Allan Garnett, Shelton George and Carlos Grant scoring in the third, eighth and 17th minutes.

For Canje, John West netted a Guinness Goal in the 19th minute.
Playing on home turf, NA Kings needled Fast-7 as Leonardo Adams found the back of the net in the 14th minute.
Outsiders dispatched Goalers 3-0. Delroy Ferdinand netted a Guinness Goal in the 20th minute with Derrick Taylor converting in the eighth minute.

East Bank Gunners riddled Constab 2-0, with Mark Wronge and Joseph Giddings netting in the sixth and 11th minutes, respectively.
In other games, NA Kings-B overcame Dam Boys 1-0, courtesy of Keon Williams in the fourth minute, while Hopetown pipped Black Sharks off the boot of Darren Douglas in the sixth minute.

Twenties defeated Top Form 2-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time saw the two tied at 0-0.
The respective winners will now advance to the group round. Group A consists of Trafalgar, Hopetown, Lichfield and NA Kings B.

Group B comprises NA Kings, East Bank Gunners, Outsiders and Twenties.
The finals of the Berbice Zone will take place at the same venue next Saturday (March 16).
