SURAJ Jailall, 29, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, is now dead. He had been clinging to live since Sunday in hospital after he was chopped to the back of his head by his sister’s boyfriend.
Reports are that the suspect and Jailall were involved in an argument while they were drinking at a corner in the community, a street away from where the now deceased man lived.
According to his relatives, during the argument, the men were cautioned by persons and they had stopped, but sometime later the suspect again began accosting the 29- year-old and he, the suspect, then left and went home. Shortly after, the man returned with a cutlass and chopped Jailall to the back of his head, causing him to stumble all the way home.
The man did not tell his mother who opened the house door for him, that he was chopped. It was until after a while that they became aware that the man was injured and he was quickly rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was treated and had his wounds sutured. When the Chronicle visited the home, family members were preparing for a wake; and the suspect’s sisters were over at the home of the deceased offering their condolences to the family, especially the dead man’s mother who has been slipping in and out consciousness.
Relatives told this publication that even after the chopping incident, the man who did the act was not arrested. It was only after the victim died and the police were told of this that they made an attempt to arrest the suspect. It was, however, after the relatives visited the police station at Wales and told the ranks that the victim of the chopping was dead, that they came to the village to arrest the suspect. This newspaper was also informed that a post-mortem is to be performed on the man; and from there, charges would be considered at the legal of the legal bodies which advises the force in this regard.
