FOUR men yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for attempting to smuggle birds through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Particulars of the charge read that during the period November 1 to December 8, 2018, at the CJIA, the men who were known to each other arranged to export a number of birds to a foreign country. This was done without permission from the Guyana Wildlife Association or any of the relevant authorities.
Among the quartet were 23-year-old Alex Heywood and 34-year-old, Denzel Williams, who are members of the Guyana Police Force. The others are 31-year-old, Prem Rajaram and 40-year-old Gregory Ramkellwan.
The court heard that on the day in question, the men were attempting to smuggle the birds through the airport and bribed the two police officers with the sum of $600,000.
The matter was reported and the suspects were apprehended. The prosecutor did not object to bail, which was granted in the sum of $100,000 each. The defendants will return to court during the coming week
