Duo charged with murder of Samatta Point handyman

PRINCIPAL Magistrate Faith McGusty on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, remanded two men to prison for the murder of 53-year-old Rohan ‘Khanhai’ Persaud, whose lifeless body was found along a track at Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara.

Heeman Gocool and Khemraj Persaud made their appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, and were not required to plead to the capital offence of murder.
Particulars of the charge alleged that, on February 13, 2019, at Samatta Point, Grove, Gocool and Persaud murdered the 53-year-old man.

Police Prosecutor Dominic Bess requested a short adjournment for the police file to be completed. Magistrate McGusty granted Bess’ request and adjourned the matter until March 12, 2019.

According to reports, Rohan Persaud was a friend of the two defendants and was last seen in their company imbibing.

It is alleged that Persaud was killed at Samatta Point, Grove, EBD on the day in question, after accusing Gocool of having a sexual relationship with his wife, who had moved and was living at Timehri, EBD.

Persaud’s body was found with a wound to the lower abdomen.
Reports indicate that Gocool was living at Persaud’s home due to a family dispute. However, while living with his friend, Gocool was allegedly having a sexual relationship with Persaud’s wife.

to this, Persaud and Gocool were constantly engaged in quarrels and this caused the wife to take up residence with relatives at Timehri, EBD.

However, on day in question, Persaud was drinking with Gocool and Khemraj Persaud when an argument ensued. It is alleged that Persaud accused Gocool of being a “Sweet man” and of having sexual intercourse with his reputed wife. As a result, a scuffle ensued between the two, during which it was alleged that Gocool took a stingray bone and stabbed Persaud to his abdomen, causing him to ‘drop dead’.

Gocool and Khemraj Persaud made good their escape and were later arrested by the police.
