ELTON Dharry is ready to prove himself against former Mexican world champion José Alfredo Rodríguez.  The pair will battle in Queens, New York on March 8.

The Guyanese-born boxer said that he has fought numerous skilled fighters in the past and is prepared for the clash.

“I’ve been in the ring with lots of experienced fighters so I’m not worried about anything. I’m a very experienced fighter myself.”

Rodrigues, known as Torito, was a late replacement.  Dharry’s camp had initially organised with another boxer, but he dropped out of the fight.

In the bantamweight clash, over eight rounds, the 33-year-old Dharry (5ft 6’) is giving up four years to the Mexican and two inches in height.

Rodriguez, who held the WBA light flyweight title from 2011 to 2012, also won the International Boxing Federation super flyweight title in 2017.  The 29-year-old’s record currently stands at 32 wins from 39 fights.

WINNING STREAK

Dharry (22-5-1) aims to continue his winning streak, which is currently at 20 consecutive fights.

“I feel good, I’ve trained well and I’m confident that I’ll win.”

The New York-based boxer, who has had a string of titles attached to his name, including the national bantamweight title, WBC Caribbean bantamweight belt, IBF Intercontinental title and the WBU Americas bantamweight belt, said that his main focus at this stage of his career is a world title and he hopes to use this fight as a stepping-stone.

“I’ve had 4 titles, but right now I’m looking to get the world title.”

Dharry is currently ranked 10th in the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight division.
