A FIRE on Thursday afternoon at Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, has left a two-year-old child dead.

Reports are that around 14:00hrs, the fire was observed in a bedroom at the top- flat of the building, which stood opposite the National Agricultural Research Extension Institute (NAREI) compound.

The child’s grandmother was reportedly in the bottom-flat of the building when the fire started in the bedroom.

An eyewitness told the Guyana Chronicle that neighbours responded to the fire but the blaze was too much for them to handle. Attempts were made to retrieve the child from the bedroom but responders could not contend with the smoke.

Members of the Guyana Fire Service who responded to the fire, managed to contain the blaze to the house where the fire started.
