THE post-mortem report done on the body of Godfrey Phillips, who was killed after attempting to intervene and bring peace during a domestic altercation between a woman and her reputed husband, has confirmed that the man died from a stab wound to his abdomen.

Phillips, a father of four, was stabbed and killed on January 20, 2019, one house away from his 3028 ‘D’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown home.

The post-mortem was done on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, by Doctor Nehaul Singh, at Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary and the cause of death was given as a stab wound to abdomen.

The body was identified by Subrena Phillips (wife of the deceased) and Joycelyn Scott (sister of the deceased). The body was handed over to relatives for burial.
The police had reported that Wednesday, January 23, 2019 about 11:45hrs, Phillips, who operated a shop at his residence, was closing the business when he became aware that the suspect and his reputed wife were having an argument.

According to the police, Phillips intervened and the suspect of Pike Street, Sophia, became enraged, whipped out a knife and allegedly stabbed him (Phillips).
Phillips was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle the day after the incident, Subrena Phillips said that she was at home when she received the news that her husband was killed. She added that her children informed her that her husband was, at the time, attempting to make peace when the incident took place.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that the dead man was going to shower when he heard the commotion between the two and pleaded with the aggressor to “relax.” The man reportedly turned to him (Phillips) and immediately whipped out a knife and stabbed him.

The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle, while the victim was picked up and rushed to the hospital. The suspect was later captured in the village by police officers. The police identified the suspect as a resident of Pike Street, Kitty and he is expected to be charged with the capital offence.
