… One Guyanese in 13-man squad to face England in first Test

WEST Indies will face off with England in the first of three Tests from January 23 in Barbados with yet another strong Barbadian presence.

Chief selector Courtney Browne and company have announced a 13-man squad with seven Barbadians, a philosophy which has come under fire in recent years with many blaming the selection panel for their “unwillingness” or “inability” to bring the right blend of players together for any one series.
The team’s inconsistency and the inability to select the right combination of players will continue to come with a cost.

Two uncapped players: John Campbell the 26-year-old left-handed opening batsman, and Shamarh Brooks, the 30-year-old right-handed middle-order batsman, were named.
There are recalls for fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and left-hander Darren Bravo. Fast bowler Oshane Thomas has been named as cover for Joseph, who is making a comeback from injury.

The remaining of the squad reads: Jason Holder (captain), Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican.
A release from CWI yesterday, indicated that the selectors have named an exciting squad balancing players who have performed strongly in recent Tests with players who have been recalled or called up for the first time due to recent performances.
However, the selectors’ insularity selection policy saw only one Guyanese (Hetmyer) making the cut.

There is no place for Devendra Bishoo, Keemo Paul, Chandrapaul Hemraj, or even wicket-keeper Anthony Bramble.

While Bishoo and Paul had limited success on their recent international outing, Bishoo remains the region’s best leg-spinner. Paul, on the other hand returned from his injury to claim a maiden 10-wicket haul last weekend during the regional 4-day game against Windward Islands Volcanoes.

The left-handed Hemraj as well as Bramble must feel somewhat unfortunate. The duo continue to make a huge impact at the first-class level, the region’s premier tournament where players’ performances are used to select the Windies team.

For the records, Hemraj piled up 777 runs from his last 11 games for the Guyana Jaguars, including his maiden first-class ton, 144 against Barbados Pride earlier in the year.
Bramble chalked up 613 runs in the Four-day tournament at an average of 47.16, while striking a career-best 196 not out last first-class season. At present, he has already chalked up 327 runs from four games with two hundreds this season.

Meanwhile, Chronicle Sport has decided to feature the batting and bowling averages from the recent Tests tour to India and Bangladesh.
