A two-day workshop, ahead of the opening round of the Junior Caribbean Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT), wrapped up yesterday in Barbados.

The session which featured both classroom and practical sessions took place at the Bushy Park Raceway, venue of the first of the three rounds of CJKAT.

Yesterday’s session featured three groups of 20-minute practice sessions where drivers were able to have coaching sessions by former F1 driver Tommy Byrne who now specialises in coaching children.

He spoke to Chronicle Sport, “It was great, I’ve dealt with a lot of kids before and just to see the progression from two days ago to now. And they are really nice kids from the three islands and it’s nice to be down here.”

“There are drivers here (this weekend) who could absolutely compete with the rest of the world,” he added.

Deputy chief trainer for the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, the body accredited by the FIA to train other drivers around the world, Ronan Morgan, also spoke to Chronicle Sport.

“We just wrapped up a two-day course and we were really surprised at the level of knowledge that the young people have; these young karting racers from 11 to 15 years old,” he said.

Then, over the last two days, we saw a big improvement in their driving and their behaviour and in their discipline and in their approach to the sport.”

He dubbed it a huge success.

Drivers now switch gears to the race aspect of this weekend with the first official practice set for today. That will be followed by qualifying which determines the starting the starting order for race one and a reverse of the qualifying grid will form race two.

Race three’s starting order will be determined by the fastest laps in races one and two and the final tally of points will take place before the circuit is reset to a new configuration for the following day.
