AAG’s first Developmental Meet of 2019 a success

… Baird and Archibald in form

THE Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held their first Developmental Meet of 2019 over the past weekend at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.

The distance of the events at developmental meets differs from the normal events. However the field events remain the same. In the Open category, Emmanuel Archibald (University of Guyana) copped a sprint double in the 150m and 300m races, to go along with his win in the long jump while National javelin record holder Leslain Baird – not known for sprinting – took the 60m dash also the javelin throw.

Archibald ran an impressive time of 15.60 seconds in the 150m ahead of Davin Fraser (16.30s) of Police Progressive Sports Club (PPYC) and Michael James (16.69s) of GDF.

In the 300m, Archibald clocked 35.30 seconds to finish ahead of Elton Bollers of New Amsterdam United (NAU) by seven hundredths of a second while Akeem Stewart (GDF) was third in 36.32 seconds.

Meanwhile, in the 60m, GDF’s Baird who ran 6.89 seconds, finished ahead of seasoned sprinters Tevin Garraway (UG) who clocked 6.91 seconds while Owen Adonis (UG) was third in 7.04 seconds.

Baird took the javelin throw with a below-par throw of 67.13m while Archibald won his favoured long jump event after leaping a distance of 7.82m.

The Under-18 category saw some impressive performances from Kenisha Phillips of Running Braves Athletics Club (RBAC) who took the 150m and 300m Girls’ sprint double while Loneil Marks of Hopetown Flames Athletics Club clocked a time of 35.30 seconds to win the Boys’ 300m dash.

The second Developmental Meet of the AAG will take place on January 26 at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
