GT Beer football continues on Boxing Night with a double-header

By Joe Chapman

THE Upper Demerara Football Association’s sixth GT Beer year-end football championship will continue tomorrow– Boxing Night– with a double-header as the round robin stage of the ten-team championship nears its end at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. However, the evening’s matchups are likely to be crowd pullers as the first game will see the defending champions, Botafago, taking on Topp XX in a battle for a semi-final spot.

From 19.00hrs, Botafago will have to show early form as they seek to retain their crown and Topp XX will be hoping to make the best of a second chance to reach the final four after they narrowly qualified to play for a place after being the best group second team, and second in Group Three behind Winners Connection.
That opportunity Topp XX will be looking to grasp with both hands or feet and their team should be brimming with confidence after losing narrowly to Winners Connection, 2-1, in their last outing.

The champions, Botafago, are going to be going all out to move to the semi-finals after gaining a bye to this final round play.

The second game is doubtful between Eagles United and Hi Stars.
Hi Stars of West Watooka are mourning the loss of one of their players, Leonard Peters (Jr.), who was fatality stabbed a few days ago and that in itself could be a good reason that they are unable to field a strong team against the Upper Demerara Champions– Eagles United.

Capital FC is looking at the situation since they and Eagles played to a 0-0 stalemate and they defeated Hi Stars and the result between the two, Eagles and His Stars, could determine their fate.

What is possible is that should Hi Stars decide that they cannot field a team, then a decision should be taken by the UDFA to have Eagles United and Hi Stars battle.
Capital FC, on their debut, held Eagles to that 0-0 stalemate.
Could they do it again since a result will have to be arrived at to determine which of the two will play in the semi-finals set for Friday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground?
