MEANWHILE Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo denied rumours that Persaud was bought, claiming that he too was surprised by Persaud’s vote. He offered that perhaps being that Persaud is from East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six), where many sugar workers have experienced hardship with the closing of sugar estates, may have swayed the defective government MP.

“I myself was a bit surprised about the arrangement that he [Persaud] voted [for the motion]. The answer is no [he was not bought]. We were hoping that we would’ve got someone or two persons to vote conscience. I suspect [because] he comes from the sugar belt too, I’m thinking that living in that community he probably saw the hardships,” Jagdeo suggested.

Jagdeo appealed for maturity from supporters of both the government and opposition sides to be professional and respect the democratic process.

“We have to deal with this situation. It’s unprecedented in our country and both sides have to display maturity in addressing it,” the opposition leader noted.

“This is a feature of our constitution that is provided there by the framers of the constitution. In fact it was there since Forbes Burnham was President. That feature of the constitution was used today in a democratic setting and the house voted in a particular way. We have to respect our constitution and the democratic process.”
