WITHIN two weeks, a Berbice woman lost her husband and her home. Her Lot 133 Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice home was mysteriously destroyed by fire on Sunday.
Bibi Shamroon Khan, 51, a mother of two, recounted that as she sat in her hammock on the lower-flat of her two-storey house, she was alerted by shouts of fire and thereafter she saw black smoke billowing from the upper flat of the building.

Moments earlier, the woman said that she was on her mobile phone with her adult children who live nearby, when her daughter-in-law left to go to the upper-flat to rest in the verandah.

“I lost my valuables and my home to fire. I don’t know what is happening,” she lamented.
However, the victim praised the Guyana Fire Service which responded about 10 minutes after the initial call. Due to their timely response, the fire was contained to the upper-flat. However, her losses include US currency, along with furnishings and personal items, amounting to millions of dollars.
