EXCEPT in cases where a breach of the peace is occasioned, no member of the Guyana Police Force should find themselves getting involved in disputes between tenants and landlords, Police Commissioner Leslie James said.
He made his position clear during a recent tour to a number of police divisions last week.
The commissioner reminded his officers that such matters are civil in nature and ought to be dealt with by the courts. James also said that a memo to this effect will soon be dispatched to all police stations.
He stressed that if ranks are not clear on what should be done when these matters arise at their respective stations, they should immediately contact their subordinate officer(s), sub-divisional officers and if possible, the commander of the division.
There have been instances where landlords made requests to the police to evict their tenants.
