Police investigating $700,000 fuel scam

– at Ministry of Education

THE police are said to be investigating a case whereby over 4300 litres of diesel totalling $788,773 was obtained under the Ministry of Education (MoE) by vehicles not registered to it.  The incident reportedly occurred in December 2017, with the fuel being uplifted on 13 different occasions from the GuyOil Regent Street station.

According to the Auditor General’s Report for 2017, “Six vehicles not registered as property of the ministry were used to uplift 4,351 litres of diesel valued $788,773.

“On average, in excess of one 45-gallon drum was uplifted on each occasion. We could not determine the basis on which such quantities of fuel were uplifted, and whether it was in the public’s interest.”

In their response, the ministry has noted that the matter was reported to the police in Janaury 2017 so that an investigation could be mounted.

The ministry also sent a follow-up letter to the police in February of this year, seeking a status of the investigation.

The Auditor General’s Office has advised that the ministry follow up the matter with the police so that the investigation can be expedited.
