THE second edition of the Prime Minister’s T20 Softball Cup received a major boost yesterday when Fly Jamaica made a presentation of an undisclosed sum towards the organisers, the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. (GSCL Inc.).
The three-day tournament is set for October 19-21 at various grounds in Georgetown.
During the simple presentation ceremony held at the company’s head office at Ogle, Marketing Coordinator Patricia Lewis, prior to presenting the cheque, said the company is always serious of its corporate responsibility. Lewis further noted that the donation is a way of giving back to the society.
She congratulated the GSCL Inc. for their efforts in promoting the sport, and at the same time she wished the teams every success during the tournament.
In response, Mario Allicock who represented the organisers thanked the business entity for its support.
Meanwhile, the teams participating in the tournament were drawn in their respective groups last evening.
The final fixtures will be published in tomorrow’s edition. Twenty-four teams have been confirmed for the tournament, inclusive of five international teams from the USA and Canada.
This year the organisers have indicated that there is a substantial increase of cash prizes for both categories. The winning teams from the Open and Masters categories will pocket $100 000 more than last year’s winners. This year $700 000 will be up for grabs in the Open category while the Masters will vie for the winners’ purse of $600 000. Both categories will have a runners-up prize of $100 000 as well as trophies.
Everest cricket ground will host the finals on October 21. Lighted bails will be used in the competition and added entertainment will be provided by the Caribbean Hot Shot Crossover band and cheerleaders during the finals.
The tournament is being played, in collaboration with National Sports Commission, Ministry of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport.
