WITHOUT a regional 50-over cricket title since 2005, Guyana’s senior team, the Guyana Jaguars, departed these shores yesterday for Trinidad and Tobago.

The team is set to compete in Group A of the Cricket West Indies Super50, starting on Wednesday.

To achieve another milestone, the senior selection panel announced the squad with no real surprises, with the left-handed Leon Johnson once again at the helm.

The squad is fully cognisant of the hard work that is needed to lift the trophy that has been eluding them over a decade now. Prior to 2005, Guyana reigned supreme in 1980, 1983, 1985, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2003.

The six Franchises will once again be joined by the Combined Campuses and College (CCC) Marooners and the USA, with Canada and West Indies B completing the ten teams.

Chanderpaul Hemraj will join the West Indies team in India after playing three Super50 games for the Guyana Jaguars.

Forty-two matches will be played before the final on Sunday, October 28 at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, as the tournament hosts the region’s biggest cricket rivalries over an action-packed 26 days.

Group A will also feature Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, Canada, West Indies B and Guyana Jaguars while Group B comprises Barbados Pride, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Jamaica Scorpions, Combined Campuses and Colleges and United States.

The Guyana Jaguars 14-man squad includes, Johnson, Anthony Bramble-Vice Captain, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Raymon Reifer, Sherfane Rutherford, Christopher Barnwell, Romario Shepherd, Veerasammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie, Ramaal Lewis, Ricardo Adams, Trevon Griffith and Clinton Pestano.

The coach is Esuan Crandon and manager/assistant coach is Rayon Griffith. They will also be accompanied by physiotherapist, Neil Barry.

Ronaldo Ali mohamed and Kemol Savory are on stand-by and will join the team when selected players will depart to fulfil their duties on the Windies tour to India. Chronicle Sport was informed that Hemraj is one of those players who will join the West Indies team in India after playing three Super50 games for the Jaguars.

Windward Islands are the defending Super50 champions.
