Teen killed in collision with minibus

THE police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred around 21:15hrs on Monday night on the Good Faith Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) , involving minibus and a pedal cyclist.

The minibus, BTT 5273, was being driven by a 59-year-old La Raisonable, ECD, resident while the pedal cyclist was identified as Ricardo James, 17, a labourer, of Lot 12 Recess Village, Mahaicony.

According to the police, enquiries disclosed that the minibus was proceeding west along the southern carriageway and the cyclist was also travelling east along the said southern side of the road as the bus. It is alleged by the bus driver that the cyclist suddenly swerved north into his path and collided with the front left side of his vehicle. As a result of the impact, the front wheel of the bicycle was dislodged and the cyclist fell onto the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, who passed a breathalyser test performed by the police, remains in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
