Consultations on revision of Amerindian Act 2006 begin

THE Steering Committee of the Amerindian Act 2006 Revision comprising of representatives of key Amerindian organisations has completed training of facilitators to enable a smooth process in making informed recommendations.

Among the organisations with representatives on the committee are: the National Toshaos Council (NTC), Amerindian Peoples Association, The Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana, the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous Peoples and the Amerindian Development Foundation.

In a release the Amerindian Peoples Association said the last of a four part training workshop concluded on June 22, 2018 in Georgetown with a plan to ensure that as many as possible Indigenous Villages and communities, especially those who operate as District Councils, are prepared to make recommendations in a systematic manner.

The facilitators will assist the village councils and other residents to better understand the current act as it relates to their concerns and to document their recommendations for revision. These recommendations are expected to be submitted in written form to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs who has officially commenced consultations. The Moruca Sub-Region District Council is meeting in the host village of Santa Rosa, Moruca, Region 1, from June 30 to July 2, 2018. The Upper Mazaruni District Council and the North Pakaraimas District Council are also expected to meet in early July. The communities of Region 2 are slated to have their revision meetings in the first week of July.
